Seeing God as He Truly IS
The two single gals to whom I was assigned for my week in
India teach English to Muslim women, and currently have about
35 students coming four days a week. They range in age from 16
to 50+ and were all very excited about the opportunity to
learn English. They would come into the house completely
veiled with only a slit for their eyes to see out, and leave
the same way. But while they were there, since it was only
women, we got to see their faces.
Underneath the veils are these precious women who smile, laugh
and cry over the same things we do. They, like so many, are
searching for the truth and waiting for someone to share
Christ with them.
Our group of three also got to do some traveling north of that
city. Once we arrived in the new town, three men who are
believers picked us up, and they served as our guides during
our stay. The best part was when they took us to each of their
houses to meet their families and drink chai (tea). They lived
out in this village, and it seemed like everyone in the
village was following us from house to house. We would sit
down to drink tea and people would be peering in every window
and door. They were so excited to have us there and had us
pray in each house we visited. I enjoyed the fellowship with
these brothers and sisters more than any other part of the
trip.
During my previous times of traveling and living in Asia, it
was always hard for me to comprehend why I had so much
materially speaking, and those with whom I was working had so
little. I always wondered why God blessed me so much and
didn't seem to bless them in the same way.
God clearly addressed that issue in my heart while I was in
India. While spending time with these Christians, I saw that
they valued two things far and above everything else: God and
each other. They valued these two things so much that they had
a joy about them even in their extreme poverty that I don't
have despite my many possessions. In poverty, they have been
able to see past the temporal and lay hold of the eternal in a
way that seems to have eluded me. Somehow God seemed to be
saying to me, "Don't question my love or blessing in the
life of another." It may very well be that my brothers
and sisters in Asia who have so little by the world's
standards have actually received the greater blessing by being
spared the distractions that keep me from seeing God as He
truly is.
