Kimberly Davis
Journalist and high school English teacher
Southern Africa

Kimberly Davis, a former high school English teacher and journalist, has served with her husband, D. Ray, through the IMB since1992. She now works in Richmond, Va., where she assists her husband in his role as Richmond associate to Southern Africa. On the field, they worked as missionaries in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Harare, Zimbabwe.

“We had no idea that God could use our teaching and business skills in a foreign country,” Davis said.

How God has used them

Their first job in South Africa was in purchasing. “My husband used his skills from Lockheed Aircraft to purchase supplies, work with government taxes/exporting, and ship items,” she said.

“I used my teaching skills to lead women's Bible studies. Later, I home-schooled my three children.”

“My journalism skills allowed me to write many stories for Baptist state papers during the past ten years. Collecting information for those stories was always an adventure due to some of the remote places I was sent to cover news.”

A word to college students

Davis encourages people interested in pursuing a secular vocation to remember that God uses every type of interest, hobby or work skill to help spread the Good News all over the world.

“There are many jobs for young people with skills in the business or journalism areas,” she said. “Accountants, graphic art designers, web page designers, computer programmers, photographers, teachers, and administrators/managers can easily find a place to serve overseas.”
