The world is at a crossroads these days. Although there are signs that its nations are finally beginning to take the climate crisis seriously, it is ultimately up to us as citizens to make choices that heal our planet instead of condemning it to a future of ruin and decay.
In this article, we will share a few ways you can help tip the scales towards a healthier world in the years ahead.
1) Eat free-range meats
While some swear by vegetarianism for a variety of reasons, some can’t bring themselves to stop eating meat (and why would you – it’s delicious and filled with nutrients that are hard or near impossible to get from non-meat sources).
If you find yourself in this camp, going free-range is the best way to be environmentally-responsible. Not only is the more humane choice for the animal that will become your dinner, but the rejection of factory farming techniques makes these sources of flesh less carbon intensive, and more flavourful (how can you lose!).
However, one common problem revolves around the difficulty of accessibility to these meats in some communities.
Fortunately, there is a growing trend of ordering your free-range meat online these days, making it easy to be a responsible carnivore even if there isn’t a brick and mortar free-range shop nearby.
2) Bike and walk instead of driving
If the corner store is within easy walking or biking distance of your home, why would you ever jump in the car?
Not only does cycling or strolling avoid the unnecessary release of carbon into the atmosphere, but it also saves you money on gas, and it gets you into shape.
Additionally, consider taking the bike to work during the warmer months of the year. If it is a bright, sunny day outside, there’s nothing like an early morning ride into work while everyone else in stuck in traffic.
In addition to the aforementioned environmental benefits, you’ll arrive at work energized and ready to tackle the day ahead of you.
3) Reduce, reuse, recycle
If you aren’t being mandated to do these already by your municipality, you need to start now. Many existing landfills are at their breaking point, and if you toss away a material that can be put back into the manufacturing process, you are fueling further carbon emissions and habitat devastation by companies that continue to mine for primary sources of raw materials.
By reducing the amount of things you use and by reusing things for other purposes, you’ll be saving yourself money in the process, and we could all use a little extra change in our pocket these days, couldn’t we?
